Ice melting
The world’s glaciers and ice sheets are shrinking rapidly. This is due to global warming caused by human activities. As carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases rise, the polar atmosphere gets warmer, especially in the Arctic. That warmth causes the glaciers to melt, calve, and retreat on land and into the sea.
Melting ice is a problem because it raises ocean levels. But even if you live far away from a melting glacier or ice sheet, you may still experience higher sea levels because of changes in Earth’s gravity resulting from the mass loss. Scientists use satellite measurements to track the mass of ice sheets and glaciers.
Ice melting also disrupts ecosystems, particularly in polar regions. Species that depend on ice for survival, such as polar bears and seals, are losing their habitats. Changes in polar regions can also influence migratory patterns and food chains worldwide.
Using ice melt products wisely can help minimize the harm they can do to plants and pets. But don’t be fooled by specialty claims such as “pet friendly.” Unless a product is specifically formulated to avoid damaging grass or plants, it is probably no safer for dogs and cats than plain rock salt. Rather than spreading salt, lead your pet through a rinse tray after a walk to remove excess salt and prevent licking that can worsen irritation. And when using ice melt, take care not to spread it directly on vegetation, since it can damage the root systems and hinder their ability to soak up water and nutrients.
